After 2021's sprawling Next Wave Acid Punx compilation, the Berlin by way of New York City extraordinaire, Curses (aka Luca Venezia), returns with DEUX. The 49-track release-jammed into three CDs and three double LPs-packs a serious punch of dark dance; with an array of genres that include minimal synth, new beat, electro and italo body music, there's something here for everyone. Ahead of the full release in the fall we are excited to bring you this DJ sampler as a taster. On this 12" you'llfind two unreleased (!) Curses reworks of Nuovo Testamento and J.W.B. Hits The Beat originals that have been absolute highlights in his DJ sets lately, and two tracks by Marie Möör and Cabaret Voltaire that are taken from Curses' classics selection.
Opening this 12" is an exclusive remix of Los Angeles and Bologna based Nuovo Testamento's Heartbeat by Curses himself. Taken from the band's 2023 album Love Lines, Heartbeat - in its original form a shimmering italo synth pop number, part Danceteria-era Madonna, part Yazoo - has been ruthlessly retooled here by Curses for strobe lit sweatboxes. Shifting the emphasis from its sparkling synths and pop melody towards the rhythm section, the track's synth bass now dominates the track just as its martial kick drums and gated snares push us deeper into EBM territory.
Originally released back in 1987, Curses' 'Revamp' of New Beat classic J.W.B. Hits The Beat's Body On Body brings the track right up date, pushing the tempo and toughening up the drums whilst stripping it back down to focus on the portentous choral synth pads and teasing us with its ecstatic vocal samples before the effervescent Italo melody brings it all together. A perfect synthesis of past and present, much like the compilation it's taken from.
'Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX' is a return to the dark romantic of the past, present and future. An undying passion for all things post-punk/wave/body music and beyond.
