This year marks a major milestone in the history of electronic music: the 30th anniversary of Jeff Mills’ legendary Live at Liquid Room, recorded in 1995 in Tokyo and widely regarded as one of the greatest DJ mixes of all time. A true techno anthology, this set made history with its boldness and intensity, inspiring generations of DJs and producers around the world.

“30 years ago, Techno music was still in its infancy, still formulating itself and attempting to find firm footing in the genre of Dance Music. Many new artists and records labels were introduced to the World as many DJs were justifiably recognized. This Liquid Room mix marks a cornerstone of the genre. The crossing and never returning back to way things were. Techno could only move forward and it did. “

-Jeff Mills

A real bona fide alltimer, Jeff’s legendary ’95 live template for high-velocity, hypnotic DJing still kills like little else 30 years later.?

"Shelling 38 tracks in 67 minutes, broken in three parts by daring fade outs at peak time, Mills delivers a masterful example of techno coming into its own in the mid ‘90s as a unique facet of the era’s intense feedback loop between dancers, DJ and technology. In all acknowledgement that we’re probably preaching to the choir here, the Detroit dynamo comes absolutely ruthless with it, deploying all the tricks learned from his days as a notoriously skilled hip hop and electro DJ, to a more linear format that best allows for optimal momentum and on/off-the beat EQ tweaking and cross-fader chops.

In a 2020s of instant CDJ gratification, where posers spend more time exhibiting armpits and pouting than locked-in, there’s an extra frisson of thrill to knowing Mills did this analog, riding the pitch adjuster, stroking the platter, and even turning the power off, which all lends an extra, un-quantised tension and funk to the process that can’t be replicated by digitally-locked DJ formats. They both have their place, but this mix is basically the dogs bollocks and never to be repeated."
